Should You Self Identify Your Race, Gender, Blood Type, Shoe Size?
Short answer, YES, if you have a vagina or are a person of color, have a disability or are a veteran. Why? Ugh, this is a lot but the short of it is that when companies are self-monitoring OR being monitored by the government, we need to SEE how many people in PROTECTED CLASSES have applied, been denied, etc. Grab a Starbuck’s coffee and settle in. I’m gonna try to explain this shyt in a way that makes sense.
Let’s say you have a Ph.D. in Fuckery. I do, BTW. Anyway, you’re looking for a job that requires, at minimum, a Ph.D. in Fuckery. The company is looking for someone with 20+ years of experience in the art of Fuckery, with a special emphasis on creating pretty charts and graphs using contract workers who are also skilled in the art of photoshop. In this case, more specifically, they want someone who can go on Black Twitter, curate the best of the Black Photoshop arm of Black Twitter, then republish them to their own media outlet. You know the deal. They are only hiring people in the 20000 zipcode. That just happens to be my zip code.
The company does some work with the federal government OR is flagged for EEOC investigation or is flat out sued. The folks come in and check the company applicant tracking system. They see the following:
Applicants: 26
Applicants Who Meet All Qualifications: 20 (Use this as our 100%)
White men NOT in any protected class (WNP): 12 (60%)
WNP Who Got Interviews: 7 (35% of total qualified)
People in Protected Classes (PC): 8 (40%)
Black, Female PCs: 1 (3% of total qualified)
PC Who Got Interviews: 0
The investigators go look at census information and they find that the 20000 zipcode is comprised of the following:
Ph.D.’s in Fuckery: 40 (Use this as out 100%)
Black Women with Ph.D.’s in Fuckery: 10 (25% of total)
WNP with Ph.D.’s in Fuckery: 8 (20% of total)
Other PCs with Ph.D.’s in Fuckery: 22 (55% of total)
So how is it that company was only able to get 3% of the available Black women to applied? Is this a trend with the company? No. In the instance that Black women do apply, do they get interviews? Sometimes. How often do they actually get hired, promoted, or fired? Let’s say that in a 10-year period, the pattern is that Black women should be in the candidate pool, should receive interviews, should be hired, should be promoted, BASED SOLELY ON NUMBERS. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU AUTOMATICALLY GET THE JOB. If you do not self-identify yourself as Black in the applicant process, it makes it difficult (not impossible), to prove systemic discrimination.
When investigators dig deeper, they find that the company only posts their jobs of MakeCorporationsGreatAgain.com, a site that boasts a startling 0% use among minorities and protected classes. There is some shyt in the game.
Don’t get me wrong, people will ALWAYS do what they want to do. But people are also extremely dumb and don’t realize how easy it is to pull the numbers right from the census data and the companies own records. They still won’t call you for interviews. However, if they ever decide to suckle at the tittays of the government, they will be expected to provide a whole lot of applicant, hiring and pay data.
